How to join us:
We welcome new members, whether you simply want to receive the Newsletter and come to occasional social events, or whether you would like to get more involved in discussions about the quality of life in the part of Canterbury. During our existence the whole of central Canterbury has been designated a conservation area and the council is much more concerned with our quality of life than heretofore. The SMACS committee meets once a month and takes action in all matters that may have an adverse effect on the area. We also have a party in the spring and a get-together and supper at the AGM in the autumn. We keep everyone informed through our Newsletters - and in the future through this web site. Join us now by clicking on this link.
The focus of our work is on the quality of life in the area, so we are interested in proposals for development, standards of paving and street lighting, arrangements for traffic and parking, garden maintenance, leisure activities and the granting of public liquor or entertainment licenses. Often we are responding to Council initiatives, but we have ourselves submitted proposals for the improvement of the area. Over the years, SMACS has been concerned in the residential development of Stour Street, the creation of the Heritage Museum (once the Poor Priests' Hospital), the condition of the city wall and the Dane John Gardens, the Maynard and Cotton Almshouses, the churchyard of St Mary de Castro, the state of the River Stour - and much more! Currently we are involved in discussions about the future use of the Norman Castle, about the development of the Tannery site and about proposals for housing on the British Telecom site.
